Reports and proposals (week 10)
EXAMPLE OF REPORT
Local eating places
The main purpose of this report is to give an overview of the town's eating facilities. As part of the survey, both tourists and local residents were asked their views.
Cafés, pubs and restaurants
There are a number of good quality restaurants in the area, which cater for most tastes: pizza houses, sushi bars, exclusive French restaurants and gastro pubs. We are also fortunate to have several cafés and sandwich bars, which are very popular in the mornings with young mothers and children and with office workers at lunchtime.
Recent trends/Dissatisfaction
It was reported that in recent years most of the fast food restaurants had extended their hours, with most open until midnight. It was also stated that prices had gone up dramatically in some of the better restaurants and, as a consequence, people are going out less than they used to or eating at cheaper restaurants.
Room for improvement/Recommendations
The main area of concern among a number of people interviewed was the lack of vegetarian meals available in many of the restaurants and it is recommended that restaurants are made aware of this view.
A report must be divided into 4 or 5 paragrapghs. The first one must contain the aim of the report, in order to inform the readers what the objective is. In addition, the first paragraph should clear out how information was obtained. The next 2 or 3 paragraphs belong to the body and should report the results of the information mentioned before. Finally, in the last paragraph recommendations should be made. Headings must be used at the begining of each paragraph. Besides, a report requires a formal writing style.
EXAMPLE OF PROPOSAL
Helping with students presentations
Introduction
In this proposal I will describe some of the difficulties students at this school have with preparing their final presentations, present the key needs to be addressed and conclude by making by making a series of recommendations on how teachers at the school could assist students with overcoming the obstacles to giving a successful presentation confidently.
Current situation
Following discussion among the students, it has become clear that many of them are feeling very nervous about the upcoming presentations. A number of students are struggling to select an appropriate structure. Comments made suggest that students lack previous experience in public speaking and would like opportunities to practise before the final assessment.
Key needs to be addressed
Students require additional help with topic selection and presentation structure, and opportunities need to be provided for students to gain experience in front of others.
Recommendations
I would suggest the following actions to teachers at the school:
- Provide students with a list of possible presentation topics.
- There should be a lesson or workshop on structuring a presentation for those who are interested.
- I recommend that students are given time during class to practise their presentations in small groups.
- Additional upfront speaking opportunities should be incorporated into classes including plays and games.
If these suggestions are implemented, it will lead to increased student confidence and performance for the final presentations.
The first paragraph of this writing must state the aim of the proposal. The next paragraphs belong to the body, where background information is expressed. In the last paragraph the writer should express him/her opinion and make some recommendations. There should be a concluding sentence. Each paragraph must have a heading and a semi-formal style should be used.
Not only to learn some English this week but also to keep in touch with my family, I have been writing postcards to my closest relatives in order to wish them a merry christmas. Furthermore, I have invited all of them to have lunch at home on December 25. I have written all of my cousins' postcards in English as I asume they will be able to understand them.
