Advice, modal verbs (week 4)
Firstly, we can appreciate an expression related to advice in the second paragraph as it says ''the first step you need to take is to determine...'' as the person writing this letter is encouraging the reader to determine what he would like to specialize on the sooner as possible. A few sentences later we can find the expression '' The most important thing here is to pick what...'' where the writer is making the reader aware of the fact that the most important thing is to follow his heart in order to choose an area of study in which he would really enjoy. The same happens at the end of the text when he says ''you need to do something that you enjoy and love'', once again the writer is advicing the reader in order to do what he loves the most. Throughout the whole text, the writer is giving advice to the reader owing to the fact that he wants him to really enjoy his studies. He is not forcing the reader as he is not using obligation expressions such as ''you have to'', he is just suggesting things in order to help who I thing might be his friend.
In the previous text we can appreciate the verb ''had to'', in this context it is used to express something that happended a long time before writing the text. Secondly, it says ''should'' in order to refer to something the writer could have done, but there was no obligation. Right after we can read ''could'' in order to talk about the verb ''can'' in past simple as he is talking about a fact that happened the previous day. In the fourth step it talks about ''would you mind?'' a conditional sentence as he is interested in politely asking a question in order to obtain an answer of something he do not know. When it says ''can/could'' he is talking about the possibility of doing something. Can is not as polite as could. Finally, ''must'' is a modal verb which can be used in question sentences; it is also used to express conclusion.
In order to improve my English during these weeks I have watched several Tv series in English such as ''The sinner'', ''Prison Break'' and ''Modern Family''. I spend from 1 to 2 hours a day watching these series so I reckon I am improving my pronunciation.
In addition, I have been talking to my English native neighbour who live downstairs. She is 15 years old and usually comes home in order to meet my brother as they are school partners, but I also get on well with her. We talk about music, films... and sometimes we play videogames together.
